You just can't kill those old BX-chipset based motherboards - even in 
the cheap boxes.

The fans, power supplies, etc. can make a difference.  The CPUs, RAM, 
and disk drives all come off the same production lines.  They aren't 
necessarily better just because you pay more and you still need to be 
prepared for a failure. The question is, how much is it worth to have a 
failure every 6 years instead of 5?

It was fixed, but you have to reboot to get the fix...  I've got it beat 
with one that has rolled over 2 times and on 400 days the third time 
around (and was only down for kernel update reboots for a few years 
before that).  That box actually is an enterprise type (an IBM 
netfinity) but other similar units failed at about the same rate as 
cheap dell desktops.  It's running RH7.3. It's behind a firewall too - 
something a little more up to date is on the outside relay.
