That's not very many.  What's slow -- the virus scanner or SpamAssassin?
SpamAssassin is very slow on large messages.  I lowered the threshold in
the default filter to 100kB from 256kB when deciding to skip spam scanning.
Maybe you should too if you get many large messages.
