[Mimedefang] mimedefang not seeing clamd-defang

So I have clamav-server running as a service, running as the defang
user, with its socket in the default mimedefang location ie;

[root at vs802 mimedefang]# lsof -P | grep MIMEDefang
clamd.def  4126     defang    5u     unix 0xba2dfa80        0t0
372345002 /var/spool/MIMEDefang/clamd.sock

both mimedefang and clamd-defang are running;

[root at vs802 mimedefang]# ps -ef | grep clam
root      3016  3015  0  2008 ?
00:00:00 /bin/bash /usr/share/clamav/freshclam-sleep
defang    4126     1  0  2008 ?        00:00:00 clamd.defang
-c /etc/clamd.d/defang.conf
root      4542 23858  0  2008 pts/0    00:00:00 grep clam


But mimedefang doesn't seem to be detecting my eicar.txt when I send it
through the sendmail/mimedefand/clamav setup.

Is there any way to debug the mimedefang part of the process?
