Look into the "socketmaps" of sendmail. I have Aliases and Virtuser as 
socketmap. What you describe seems to suggest virtuser.

However, MIMEDefang's socketmap backend fails with replies larger than a 
certain buffer getting out of sync, therefore I had to roll my own server.
