Sorry, couldn't resist. One should always try to learn from history.
History, in this case, is this mailinglists' archive. There was
an article mentioned here last year:

... it's everything a CIO should know about email before making
decisions about it. Looks like in your case, they didn't. Which
disqualifies them from making decisions, and they should leave the
details to the qualified personel (ie: you, I assume :)

... or you could start wearing a gravity-defying tie to work to
make a point.
