AFAIK, the client just contacts the WHOIS server and submits the
query.  It's completely up to the server what data gets sent back, and
the client just echoes the result without interpreting it.

You can try it yourself:  Telnet on port 43 to whois.wildwestdomains.com
and enter "roaringpenguin.com"
