This could also be a Cisco IOS router with the IOS Firewall enabled and 
the command:
ip inspect smtp
or something like that.

This is similar to "fixup protocol smtp" on a Cisco pix, but less common,
because normally/traditionally most routers are not configured to do 
layer 7 content filtering.
