Of course you can do that, but it would be in bad taste to try
to claim you were following internet standards or RFC's while
doing it.  And I'd say it would be pretty dicey to ask anyone
about interoperability problems while choosing not to follow
standards yourself - that is, everyone is equally free to reject
your messages.
