To clarify, I am not recommending a go with the flow attitude. I am
recommending a multi-tiered approach including something
customers/bosses/colleagues/whatever recognize so you don't have to list to
them when a virus does get through. I highly recommend using bad extensions
and zip checking as the first tier; ClamAV as the second tier because it's
daemonized approach, a/v trackrecord and anti-phishing components have been
stellar; and McAfee as the third tier solely because of it's status and
price.

I'm not arguing F-Prot isn't technically better than McAfee. It might be.
We think ClamAV is better or as good as both and we just have the commercial
license as a safety net. So our main argument would be price and status.

As a comparison, F-Prot is $300 a year for a Corporate Server License and
McAfee Command Line is like $75 for 5 user licenses for 2 years (based on my
last quite from 1/31/05 from CDW). Since defang is a single user, you just
need 1 license but 5 is the minimum to purchase.

Worldwide or US aside, I would argue that McAfee has a very good brand
recognition at the corporate & general user levels.

Finally, while I appreciate the security notice, I think we can all agree
that virus scanning is only useful if you are running the latest engine and
signatures regardless of the software used. So for the benefit of others
using McAfee, the McAfee 4440 engine patched the LHA exploit Secunia found
like Oct/Nov of last year.

KAM
