The most likely cause is the use of the MX_MAX_RSS and MX_MAX_AS settings in the
startup/config files. By default these are unlimited, but it is common to set
them in order to avoid denial of service problems if someone sends a message
which requires huge amounts of memory to process. However, MIMEDefang needs a
fair amount of memory to run, especially with SpamAssassin, and even more so if
multiple custom rulesets are used in SA. Use of the embedded perl option will
reduce the memory usage overall on the system, but the settings also apply to
these.

Take a look at the sizes of your running processes, and then set the limits to
something sensible like 2-3 times the current size. Alternatively, remove the
limits, or set them to something which will stress the system without killing it
if it is reached, and which should only be reached when something goes wrong. I
have mine set to 250Mb.

Best Wishes,

Paul.
