I don't agree that it's pointless at all, for the reasons you mentioned
later (local storage, etc.), but also because a junk message rejected is one
less message my users have to deal with.  Sure, pre-sorting the mail into
the inbox and a "Junk Mail" folder helps, but you still have to at least
spend a half second to a second scanning the messages in "Junk Mail" (at
least their subject lines).  Although spam definitely eats up bandwidth, I'm
more concerned with the fact that it wastes people's time and annoys them...
