[Mimedefang] MILTER - init failed to open?

I could use a little assistance from the group.  I am attempting to 
install MIMEDefang on a Solaris 5.7 server, with Sendmail-8.12.8, Perl 
5.6 and the recommended prerequisites (including SPAM Assassin).

However, when I attempt to get Milter to launch the connection to 
MIMEDefang, I get the following errors:

Mar 21 16:50:04 ns1 sendmail[5044]: h2LLnv2D005044: milter_read(mimedefang): cmd read returned 0, expecting 5
Mar 21 16:50:04 ns1 sendmail[5044]: h2LLnv2D005044: Milter (mimedefang): to error state
Mar 21 16:50:04 ns1 sendmail[5044]: h2LLnv2D005044: Milter (mimedefang): init failed to open
Mar 21 16:50:04 ns1 sendmail[5044]: h2LLnv2D005044: Milter (mimedefang): to error state
Mar 21 16:50:04 ns1 sendmail[5044]: h2LLnv2D005044: Milter: initialization failed, temp failing commands

Does anyone have any ideas as to what is occuring?
