... or drop it in the 'Spam' folder (where it gets auto-deleted after a few weeks, so it's almost the same as silently discarding, except the user has a chance to inspect the Spam folder for false positives).

We've created a special 'spamfolder' mailer which just calls mail.local with an additional flag to put the message in a subfolder, and a sendmail rule to deliver @spamfolder.local to this mailer.

Then for all users that do not wish to receive a mail, we replace the recipient with username at spamfolder.local.

Required just a few custom patches to mail.local, and some sendmail.cf hackery.
