Correct. So it's reasonable to default to "not installed".

You shouldn't. The assignments should go into the filter script. I had
the same situation with CentOS and put this in mimedefang-filter:

# Configure Virus Scanners
$ClamdSock = "/var/run/clamav/clamd.sock";
$Features{'Virus:CLAMD'} = '/usr/sbin/clamd';
$Features{'Virus:CLAMAV'} = '/usr/bin/clamscan';

Works great.
