Should I restate my question?

If I have several instances in scenario (2) [using port-forwarding and separate config files and spool directories] then they all need to be given unique names? That's a bit heavy-handed as a work-around. The shortcoming is in Mimedefang, not Sendmail.

So I'd need to modify the config files because I can't easily generate them with the .mc templates, all because there's no other way to tell what version of Sendmail I'm speaking to?

That seems a bit kludgy.
