} File-Virus wants perl 5.008. The boxes that are short of ram are by definition 
} old boxes which aren't that current... and changing perl is a big change, 

     Perl 5.8 is ancient.  It was released in July 2002.  CPAN says
that versions prior to 5.8 are unsupported.  Most people are using 5.10
which was released in December 2007.  And, for people that want to work
on the bleeding edge, 5.12 was released in April 2010.  Your systems
are out of date by almost eight years!  It is completely unreasonable
to expect anybody to support such ancient systems.
