Any directory in the current working directory.  You can call it "state",
for example.

No; what would be the point?  MIMEDefang chdirs into the per-message
directory before calling any of the filter callbacks.  (It just so happens
that the directory name is indeed stored in a global $CWD variable,
but that's just an implementation detail.)
