There is one exception: a forwarding spamcheck gateway with 'backup mx' 
functionality.

If the customer SMTP-Server is down, a cache helps you to provide something
like a 'backup MX' to your customer. All negative lookups tempfail anyway,
the other mails with existing adresses get stored in your forwarding queue and
delivered when the customers mailserver is up again.
