Answering myself.

It is actually handling much more mail than the others, as much as five
times as much.  It disposes of most messages quickly, and the load
balancer counts open connections, so, ends up feeding it more messages.

I think we're hitting the dread 1,024 ulimit.  Syslog has some "Too many
open files" messages.  The volume has spiked to more than 1,000 messages
a minute just before the errors.
