[Mimedefang] strange problems with MD 2.61

I've recently installed a new server with sendmail 8.13.8 and mimedefang
2.61 (i'm not ready for the jump to sendmail 8.14 yet)

anyways, I copied a filter from an earlier MD release that was working
fine, checked it against any of the incompatibility issues in the
release notes and I believe it should be working fine, however; the
multiplexer is timing out.

I've taken it back to an original copy that is working (but doesn't have
all the features I would like to implement) and then started making
changes to that file including debuging statements.

What I'm finding is that although the filter passes mimedefang.pl -test
and although it worked at one stage, if i add one or two lines of code
then suddenly it starts reporting things like:

Slave 5 stderr: Undefined subroutine &main::check_helo called at
/etc/mail/mimedefang/filter line 610.

(although it found the subroutine and executed it fine prior to adding a
few lines of code in filter_recipient)

I've double checked all the syntax and I don't have any unmatched braces
or anything like that.

I'm kind of stumped and tempted to downgrade to a previously known
working version of MD so I can use the features of my filter.

Has anyone else experienced anything like this? or have any suggestions?

I'm running on Fedora Core 5 with sendmail installed from RPMs, 1GB of
RAM and /var/spool/MIMEDefang on a tmpfs.

this was a completely clean install from the OS up, so there are no
previous version residuals (other than the filter I copied from another
machine and modified to meet the specific needs of this host)

any help is appreciated, thanks.
