I do not run mySQL myself, therefore I can only guess,

"longblob" is a Binary Large OBject, correct? Meaning -> The content is 
binary <stop>. No validation according character sets is performed.

Could it be your INSERT statement that chokes? In Postgres I always use 
prepared statements and I haven't found any problem with binary stuff till 
now.

Or do you extract information from the email and store it into other 
fields, that have a tighter encoding? Could you try to INSERT only one 
information after another to see which field causes the INSERT to break?
