[Mimedefang] What services need to be started?

This is my first go at mimedefrag and I'm really confused as to what needs
to be started service-wise. I've been useing spamassassin for a while now
and as of right now, I have spamd, mimedefang and mimedefang-multiplexor,
and sendmail services running. I've searched the mailing list and I came
across a posting that suggested that spamd does not need to be running,
which makes sense since reading the documentation, mimedefang will make
calls to spamassassin. But if I don't start spamd, I see in the mail log,
these entries below:

Nov 19 08:56:05 localhost spamc[8919]: connect(AF_INET) to spamd at
127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (#1 of 3): Connection refused
Nov 19 08:56:05 localhost spamc[8914]: connect(AF_INET) to spamd at
127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (#2 of 3): Connection refused
Nov 19 08:56:06 localhost spamc[8919]: connect(AF_INET) to spamd at
127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (#2 of 3): Connection refused
Nov 19 08:56:06 localhost spamc[8914]: connect(AF_INET) to spamd at
127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (#3 of 3): Connection refused
Nov 19 08:56:07 localhost spamc[8919]: connect(AF_INET) to spamd at
127.0.0.1 failed, retrying (#3 of 3): Connection refused
Nov 19 08:56:07 localhost spamc[8914]: connection attempt to spamd aborted
after 3 retries

These happen every minute, so I'm assuming these are cron job entries that
I have running. This is what is confusing me, since spamd will processes
these emails, but they don't get handled by mimedefang... assuming my
assumption is correct.

So my question is, what is the proper setup for spamd and mimedefang?

I'm only really interested in mimedefang for the antivirus integration, so
setting up mimedefang to process only emails with suspicious attachments
and letting spamassassin process everything else would be fine, but it
seems that having all services running is grossly inefficient as
spamassassin would be processing emails that would already possibly be
processed by mimedefang.

Thanks for your consideration in this request and for any insight.
