The Nigerian scams are forgeries, sent in bulk by anonymous senders.
Hoaxes like the jdbgmgr "Teddy Bear virus" hoax are legitimate email really sent by well-meaning people who know you.  There's a line there which I personally don't want to cross, though every email system manager has a different set of rules to live by.
