Aside from viruses, consider spam and phishing attempts. Checking for all 
of these represents extra load and delays on the mail server, and spammers 
and phishers are always coming up with new and clever ways to hide their 
bilk using HTML. It's much harder to hide in plain sight within a 
plain-text only email.
