are you sure about that?
i think you must have a MX record, what do you mean
'the A record', which A record? there could be lots of
them.

for exemple, i'm sending an email to eddie at baba.com
the sendmail looks up the mx record, gets the ip of
the server that has the highest priority, and connect
to its port 25... if there's no mx record, it's
impossible to know who's the mail server.

currect me if i'm wrong please.
