Speakeasy sent out a notice that it will now require SMTP AUTH for use of
its mail server:

Subject: [ Speakeasy ] Notice: Important Mail Server Policy Change

Dear Ken,

In our continuing efforts to fight spam and provide fast and reliable
Email, we are making some changes that may affect how you send email.
These changes are necessary to keep us in good standing with other
ISP's and Internet email administrators. We apologize in advance for
any inconvenience this may cause but are confident that your email
service will be enhanced and spam will be reduced. The end result
will be better email service, and less spam for you and the rest of
the world.

The first change, which will be implemented on December 7th, will
require that all hosts that connect to mail.speakeasy.net have valid
reverse DNS. If you only send through mail.speakeasy.net from your
Speakeasy DSL or T-1 line, this will not affect you. If you send
through mail.speakeasy.net from another ISP that does not provide
reverse DNS entries for their ip assignments, this may prevent you
from being able to send mail.

If you find yourself unable to send through mail.speakeasy.net, you
will need to configure your email program to use port 587 when
connecting. You will have to use authentication with this setup, so
use the same username and password that you use to read your email.
It is possible to connect to these ports using SSL/TLS. Examples of
how to configure the most popular email clients can be found at
http://www.speakeasy.net/smtp.

The next major change, currently planned for implementation in early
2006, will require that all customers use smtp authorization when
using mail.speakeasy.net to send mail. If you use mail.speakeasy.net
to send your Email, you will need to configure your email program to
use authorization. Examples of how to configure the most popular
email clients can be found at http://www.speakeasy.net/smtp.

Additionally, customers that run their own mailservers, and use
mail.speakeasy.net as a 'smart' or 'relay' host will have to
reconfigure their server to send mail directly to the Internet. This
should be very easy to do with nearly all the MTA's out there.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this change. We
are certain it will improve service for everyone.

Sincerely

The Speakeasy Engineering Team
