I recently did a pretty big version jump, from 2.36 and there's a couple
things I would consider. One is the introduction of the embedded perl
interpreter; definitely look at that, I had no problems. I would also
check out all of the ancillary perl modules and bring those up to date
first.

Depending on *how* custom your filter is that could be easy or hard.
IIRC there have been a few changes here and there. I had no issues with
mine, but the only thing I have changed is some of the Spamassassin
related bits, logging, and header adding stuff. You definitely want to
seriously consider upgrading MD, there have been numerous fixes and
improvements that, IMO, outweigh any potential upgrade pain.

In contrast, the upgrade of Spamassassin might be more traumatic. I'm
still in the midst of reading in preparation of a 2.64->3.0.0 move and I
know there've been quite a few significant changes there. You could
probably upgrade SA to 2.64 w/o too much difficulty and save the move to
3.0.0 for a later time, after you've verified your MD upgrade. In any
case, MD will have to be upgraded first, as your version does not
support SA 3.0.0

I must say, I'm very excited at the prospect of getting rid of virus,
scam, and spam mails coming from [support,webmaster,etc...]@mydomain due
to SA 3's inclusion of SPF checking.

Cheers from the MIME Field,

~Jason
