What did it for me was copying the newly installed init.pre.sample to
init.pre and restarting Mimedefang (and moving all my rules_du_jour stuff
out of the path SpamAssassin checks).

The FreeBSD port installed init.pre.sample in
/usr/local/etc/mail/spamassassin/.

spamassassin --lint also turned up a bunch of scores I had modified for
no-longer-existing rules.
