This must be post-2.45, then, because both 2.43 and 2.45 on Fedora Core 
2 show the expected output with the stock init script from the MD 
source:

root:~# service mimedefang status
mimedefang (pid 17527) is running...
mimedefang-multiplexor (pid 11087 9479 17514) is running...
  0/15 ...............    0/15 ............... 30941
