Signal 9 is a SIGKILL; someone or something is killing the slave, and I
have no idea what would be doing that.

Could it be bad memory?  I know the Linux OOM killer kills processes
with SIGKILL, but you say you have lots of RAM.  I suspect a hardware
problem.
