Good suggestions (here and elsewhere).  Thanks.

Unfortunately, this problem takes days to develop, so pinning it down is a
pain.  And when it does crop up, I can't spend too much time fiddling
around before I just have to fix the damn thing.

So this might be a slow thread.. ;)
