Helpful hint: don't. pop-before-SMTP is a pain, and one you can be
without in a modern world. Every MUA supports SMTP AUTH nowadays,
and there is no reason at all to prefer pop-before-smtp over SMTP AUTH.

Really. We are currently stuck with pop-before-smtp, and are looking
at converting a few thousand customers over to SMTP AUTH, as we want
to get rid of the pop before smtp.

If you really do go on with it, make sure you are able to easily get
the usernames that actually use the feature from your logfiles, with
a few simple greps (and not by having to pull a sherlock holmes on
various different logfiles).

This of course gets you nowhere nearer to an answer for your original
question... for which you most definately need a (perl) programmer.
