Yes, perl 5.8.0 is causing this. This is a known bug, in combination
with recent Redhat releases, where UTF8 is automatically enabled in perl.

Either upgrade to perl 5.8.4, or fix your linux configuration not to
enable unicode by default. I'm sure google will give you hints on how
to do it, it escapes me right now.
