MIMEDefang doesn't use spamc/spamd; it uses the Mail::SpamAssassin 
module directly.  Do you have some other system calling SA, eg 
procmail or spamassassin-milter?

As far as size limitations go, the default MD script won't run 
SpamAssassin on any message over 100K (the default for spamd is 200K, 
I think).  Other than that, the Sendmail MaxMessageSize option in 
sendmail.cf controls what is accepted by the MTA.
