They couldn't give money to SCO outright for their legal attack but they
could "license" something that they really didn't have to which puts a
spin on the money in the end. It also lends some credibility to their
SCO's claim. "See, Microsoft believes our claim has credit. They've paid
us licensing fees."
Lets say that I'm a big mob boss. I can't outright give money to someone
shady for their legal attack on someone else. I can however buy 100 heads
of lettuce for $1000 a head from one of their supposedly legit fronts.
An enemy suing another enemy makes your the first enemy your friend.
