[Mimedefang] Milter -- wierd handling

I'm not sure if my problem is something with MIMEDefang, or it's a general
sendmail milter problem.  However, MIMEDefang seems to be turning up the most
symptoms.  If it's a general sendmail problem, I can pass this one on to
comp.mail.sendmail.

I've got a setup where I have a box running RedHat 7.2 and sendmail 8.9.2.  I
also have MIMEDefang 2.29.  I have been running RAV 8.3, and just upgraded to
RAV 8.4.3, and that's where the adventure started.

I don't know that I'm seeing mail disrupted, but I'm seeing lots of odd
occurences from ps lists, and the maillog.

The first symptom that I'm finding is that if I run a shutdown of the mimedefang
daemons, the shutdown of mimedefang-muliplexor returns a FAILED message,
although MIMEDefang itself shuts down ok.  However, I can't find anything in my
logs other than a note that "mimedefang-multiplexor shutdown failed".  And if I
restart the mimedefang daemons, without manually killing off previously active
copies, then I have two copies of the multiplexor active.

On this, there's a lot of swapped-out processes, which wasn't happening before
my upgrade.  I also don't see this kind of output on another box I run with
similar configurations (on the other box, I'm running MD 2.33, and didn't
install it until after I had upgraded RAV.  The problem box also has some
additional customized mail handling scripting running from MIMEDefang).

My log files are also showing lots of Milter timeouts:

Any ideas on what might be causing this one, and what I should try to do to fix
things?
