Indeed, it appears at least some of my suspicions about being I/O bound
were correct, as was Justin's comment. On Sunday morning we moved /var
from the UDMA 33 IDE drive to the new Fast Ultra-Wide SCSI-3
controller/disk and the performance has improved noticably when running
SpamAssassin. The system is able to keep up now without temp failing all
over the place. This is with Bayes and Razor2 enabled, but not RBLs
(yet).

As an added safety precaution, I also took a hint from another posting
that suggested limiting the max sendmail children to 2 less than the
max number of mimedefang processes. It seems like a good idea to keep
things from running out of control.
