If I were in your position, I would upgrade MIMEDefang first.  Not because
it is more likely to solve your problem, but because it is much easier to
upgrade MD than it is to upgrade sendmail.

When you upgrade, be sure the read the CHANGES file, there are
incompatibilities that you need to address when making the change.
