[Mimedefang] MIMEDefang timeouts (clasrification)

I've got the download already, thanks.
What I am trying to understand is how mimedefang is working without it !!!!
Do I really need to have Unix/Syslog.pm installed ???
The mimedefang doco says it's optional, so what does it do (if anything) 
in RedHat 9 ???
