It's a guess, but if you telnet to port 25 (smtp) and do this:

EHLO host.foo.org
MAIL FROM: joe at foo.org
RCPT TO: joe at foo.org
DATA

it'll probably say that.  (then you'd enter the body, hit enter, hit a
., hit enter, then it's done)  So I would guess, someone/something got up
to that point in the SMTP connection and dropped out.
