That hasn't been my experience, at least for daemonized scanners.  If you
fork/exec a command-line scanner, you may be right.

Virus-scanners typically don't look for regular expressions (just constant
patterns, or else a very simplified subset of variable patterns.)  SA
makes heavy use of regular expressions, and that's probably why it is
slow.
