[Mimedefang] SpamAssassin always scores 0

I have a very wierd problem.  SpamAssassin works on the command line, 
and MIMEDefang works for virus scanning, but spam_assassin_check() 
always returns $hits == 0.  I think the problem is that there are no 
INPUTMSG files being created in the spool dir.  Otherwise I'm stuck. 
This is a new install on Linux.  I'm using MD v2.36 and SpamAssassin 
v2.55 with a proven mimedefang-filter file.  Any ideas?  Thanks.
