[Mimedefang] Max Slaves setting in Mimedefang

I'm looking for rules of thumb for Max Slaves settings for the
mimedefang multiplexor. I've been inching the number of slaves up on my
test server. I keeped increasing slaves until the system started
thrashing then backed off.

Right now I'm my test server is a Dual P3 1.2Ghz with 512MB of RAM
running Mimedefang 2.35 and SpamAssassin 2.55. (I do know I need a lot
more memory).  I've got the system set to MX_MAXIMUM=15. The server is
running smoothly. It's been handling almost 30,000 e-mail a daily
without difficulty.

I wonder if this is a good method for determining Max Slaves or is there
better methods or rule-of-thumb for setting Max Slaves. The mail
archives haven't been much help.
