[Mimedefang] Why 'defanged_src' ?

 So why are images within HTML mail getting 'defanged'?

 < img DEFANGED_src="http://www.somesite.com/images/email/spacer.gif" >
 [ note: spaces entered after < >'s to avoid munging ]


 I know there's a reason, I'm just asking what it is.
