[Mimedefang] restarting mimedefang

When I start mimedefang on my Redhat 6.2 system with the init script for
redhat the following processes are started:

mimedefang.pl 2
mimedefang 3
mimedefang-multiplexor 1

However when I stop mimedefang with the init script the 3 mimedefang
processes don't get killed. And after mimedefang is started again 3 more
mimedefang processes are started, so a total of 6 mimedefang processes
are running. And 9 after a second restart and so on. This morning when
playing with my config and after a few restarts this caused mimedefang
to return a timeout when running filter on almost any e-mail, which
pretty much renders my mailserver useless.

I then stopped mimedefang, killed the mimedefang processes manualy and
started mimedefang again and everything worked as usual.

But I keep wondering why aren't these processes killed? Shouldn't I kill
them and wait a certain time for them to end for example?
