Ah.:-)  That explains it.  Do NOT launch it that way!

The "-f" option to MIMEDefang specifies the scanner program, NOT the filter to
use!

What you must do is copy (or symlink) the filter to /etc/mail/mimedefang-filter
and start MIMEDefang like this:

/usr/local/bin/mimedefang -p /var/mimedefang.sock
